On 20th September 2019, the 2019 Harvard Book Prize Ceremony was held at Diocesan Boys’ School. We were honoured to have three students awarded the Harvard Book Prize for the academic year 2018-19 and they received the books “Disconnected: Youth, New Media, and the Ethics Gap by Carrie James” and “Bored and Brilliant: How Time Spent Doing Nothing Changes Everything by Manoush Zomorodi.”
The Harvard Book Prize is an award set up by Harvard Club of Hong Kong to award outstanding students in S.5 who have achieved academic excellence, possess exceptional personal qualities and/or have made a significant contribution to the school or community.
During the ceremony, the guest speaker Richard Chow, CEO of the charity ChickenSoup Foundation, talked about technology morality ethics and the current situation of internet usage around the globe. He pointed out the importance of “Think before you click/tap”. Nowadays, with the advancement in technology, the feature of anonymity on the internet has allowed people to simply do whatever they want online. Under such circumstance, critical thinking is essential for the users in this virtual world. We all have to shoulder the responsibility of our online behaviour and to put ourselves in others’ shoes by treating others in the way we want to be treated. There should be no bias or cyber-bullying.
All in all, it was such an invaluable opportunity for us to be invited to participate in this grand event. Not only did we get the chance to appreciate other students’ work, it was also very inspiring to get to know more about the views on internet usage and thus to reflect on our own online etiquette.
