Together with principals and careers teachers from other Tai Po secondary schools, our Assistant Principal Mr. Man Li, Careers Master Mr. Joseph Ng, and Deputy Careers Mistress Ms. Joanna Lee visited five universities and an institute in Taiwan from 7th – 12th December 2014. Organised by Tai Po District Principals Association (大埔區中學校長會), the trip aims at enriching principals’ and careers masters’ knowledge and understanding of postgraduate education in Taiwan, fostering partnerships between universities in Taiwan and secondary schools in Tai Po, and establishing connections among our careers masters and mistresses in our school and those in other schools in Tai Po.
The five universities and institute that we visited were the Lunghua University of Science and Technology (龍華科技大學), the National Taiwan Ocean University (國立台灣海洋大學), the Chungyu Institute of Technology (崇右技術學院), the Jinwen University of Science and Technology (景文科技大學), the Fo Guang University(佛光大學) and finally ,the Chung Yuan Christian University (中原大學). *
Throughout the whole trip, not only have we established connections with universities in Taiwan, but we have also had professional dialogues with teaching staff and university principals there. Universities in Taiwan are offering a lot of choices that are currently not available in Hong Kong. For example, the National Taiwan Ocean University is offering more than twenty degree programmes to nurture students to be specialists in fields related to marine sciences and maritime studies. We are convinced that all universities we visited welcome students from Hong Kong as they offer sponsorships and/ or scholarships for aspiring Hong Kong students to fulfil their dreams.
One of the most rewarding experiences was that we met our pride, Kenny Wong, in the National Taiwan Ocean University (which is ranked 14th in Taiwan as at 15.1.2015). Kenny was our S6 graduate and is now pursuing his second year of his bachelor degree in the Department of Marine Engineering. He told us that he enjoyed his life there very much as the school, which is situated along the coast with gentle breeze blowing from the sea, offers a balanced environment for research and study.
Right after the trip, the three teachers reported their achievements to the careers team members. Mr. Stefan Hung and Mr. Chan Man Yau swiftly organised a follow-up talk for all S6 students who had just applied for universities in Taiwan through Individual Applications (個人申請), ensuring that what we had just achieved could benefit our S6 students this year.
We hope that we can establish partnerships with more universities in Taiwan in the near future.
