After graduating from CUHK (major in Chemistry), I have been teaching science in secondary schools in Hong Kong for more than ten years. As an educator, I firmly believe in the power of education to change lives for the better. By enabling students in pursuing their dreams, education promotes upward mobility among classes, improving their lives eventually.
Due to technological advancement, the way we work and the meaning of interpersonal relationships have changed. Apart from assisting students in learning, teachers today are also responsible for helping students to harness the more essential skills in the 21st century such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity. In addition, non-cognitive skills (e.g. autonomy, resilience, persistence and emotional control) are indispensable in preparing students for future challenges. Thus one of my responsibilities is helping my students become more confident and perseverant, and equipping them with better learning strategies to adapt to the ever-changing challenges.
Education is more about lifelong learning rather than acing in one exam or subject in the current moment. Teachers today are also required to help students in drawing a clearer picture of their career paths. Encouragement from us could greatly promote a student in pursuing dreams. It is satisfying and also a great honor for me, to see my students gradually build up knowledge and live better in this fast-changing world. Also it is what being an educator means to me.
